New Zealand motorcycle road code study guide
Combine shared road-rule practice with motorcycle-specific questions. Pay attention to what changes when you are riding rather than driving a car.
What to focus on
- Observation and being seen
- Braking and cornering decisions
- Protective equipment and carrying passengers
A practical way to study
- Begin with observation, positioning and visibility. Picture where other drivers may fail to see you, then compare the available responses.
- Study braking, cornering, protective equipment and passengers in the motorcycle road code. Review each explanation with the rider’s situation in mind.
- Revisit motorcycle mistakes in My learning before trying a motorcycle mock test. Keep theory revision separate from practical riding training.
Common questions
Is studying the car road code enough for a motorcycle test?
Shared road rules are a useful starting point, but riders also need motorcycle-specific knowledge. Use the motorcycle practice and the official motorcycle road code to study visibility, handling and rider responsibilities.
Can I complete the basic handling skills test on this website?
No. NZTA requires a basic handling skills test before applying for a motorcycle learner licence. It is conducted by an approved instructor; GO Drive provides theory practice, not a handling test or certificate.
How should I review motorcycle questions I keep getting wrong?
Group them by the reason for the mistake: observation, road position, braking or a misunderstood rule. Read the relevant official section, then practise again and explain the safest response in your own words.
