New Zealand car road code study guide

Build your car theory knowledge by topic, from everyday road situations to signs and intersections. Use explanations to understand why an answer fits the situation.

What to focus on

  • Intersections and road signs
  • Road position and following distance
  • Parking and recognising hazards

A practical way to study

  1. Start with signs and give-way situations. In each diagram, identify your lane, intended direction and the other road users before choosing an answer.
  2. Move on to following distance, parking and hazards. Read the explanation after each answer and compare it with the relevant road code section.
  3. Revisit mistakes in My learning, then try a car mock test. Return to any topic where you cannot explain why the other options are unsuitable.

Common questions

Where should I start if I am new to New Zealand road rules?

Choose one topic, such as signs or intersections, and read its guide before practising. Use the official road code alongside the questions so that you learn how a rule applies in different situations.

When is a mock test useful?

After you have worked through several topics and reviewed your mistakes. Use it to find gaps in your understanding; being able to explain an answer is more useful than remembering its position.

Is a GO Drive mock test the official licence test?

No. GO Drive is an independent study and practice service. A mock test does not book an official test or issue a licence; check NZTA for the application process and current requirements.
